RICHMOND, Ky. - Sophomore Erin MacDonald scored a pair of first-half goals, leading the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory against Eastern Kentucky in the preseason opener for both teams.
MacDonald scored in the 10th minute and the 16th minute to give UC a commanding 2-0 halftime lead.
In the 50th minute, true freshman Emily Hebbeler scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from junior Jenn Johannigman. Johannigman then tallied her own score moments later tapping home a Kendall Loggins shot after it was deflected in front of the net.
Redshirt sophomore Teresa Smolilo scored in the 76th minute after a pass from freshman Shauna Smith to give UC a 5-0 lead. Junior Nicole Sanda closed out the scoring with 10 minutes remaining, putting home a deflected shot by sophomore Stepahnie Brindle.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Hansen played the first half in goal for the Bearcats, making one save. Sophomore Andrea Kaminski, who started all 18 matched for UC in 2006, played the final 45 minutes, but was rarely challenged.
The women continue exhibition play when they play host to Trinity Western on Aug. 23 at Gettler Stadium. The regular season opens on Aug. 31 at Gettler Stadium when UC takes on crosstown rival Xavier. It will be a special night, as the Bearcats will honor former UC women's soccer player Vanessa Antrobus Quinn, a victim of the Trolley Square Shopping Mall Shootings in Utah in February.
