CINCINNATI---University of Cincinnati head baseball coach Brian Cleary will add an international line to his resume in the coming weeks as he has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for the Great Britian National team in the upcoming European Championships. Cleary will work with the British pitchers as they battle for a spot in the 2008 Olympics.
"This was an opportunity that presented itself and given our timetable with being off the road from recruiting and being back before school starts, it really fit in well," Cleary said. "I wouldn't have agreed to this if it had taken away from any of my responsibilites here at UC. It was an opportunity from a professional stand point for me to get a different perspective and learn a little bit. My hope is to come back from this a better coach than when I left."
Cleary's squad is comprised of 28 players, many of whom play professionally either in the United States or Europe. Some of the roster is also made of U.S. collegiate players. The British will open pool play on Friday, Sept. 7 taking on Spain. Other teams in Britain's pool include France, Italy, Russia and Ukraine. Once pool play is complete, the winners will advance with the championship event wrapping up on Sept. 16.
