OPENING KICK:
The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team returns to Gettler Stadium to take on local foe Dayton on Sept. 11. The Bearcats and Flyers are set to kick off at 7 p.m. on Red, White and Blue Night. Prior to the match, head coach Meridy Glenn will be honored for her 250th career victory, a mark she reached in UC's season-opening win against Xavier on Aug. 31.
BEARCAT BITES:
Head coach Meridy Glenn picked up her 250th career victory on Aug. 31 in UC's 2-1 double overtime win against Xavier. She is 16th all-time in wins among Division I women's soccer coaches and holds a 250-175-38 overall mark.
The Bearcats finished the 2006 season with a 7-9-2 overall record and a 3-7-1 mark in BIG EAST play.
UC was picked to finish seventh in the National Division in the BIG EAST preseason coaches poll.
LAST TIME OUT:
UC was shutout, 3-0, by Michigan on Sept. 7 at the UM Soccer Field, snapping UC's two-match unbeaten streak to open 2007. The Bearcats dropped to 1-1-1, while Michigan improved to 1-0-1 with the win.
The Bearcats, coming off a pair of double overtime contests on the opening weekend of the season, appeared sluggish on offense, managing just three shots to Michigan's 24.
Stephanie Crawford got UM on the board 38 minutes in, notching her first goal of the season after a pass from Amanda Bowery. Despite a 14-1 shot advantage, the Wolverines held on to a precarious 1-0 lead at the half.
Just moments into the second stanza, Michigan added to its lead. Emily Kalmbach tallied her first goal of the season in the 48th minute. Bowery scored her first of the year to put the match on ice in the 74th minute.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS:
The Flyers come into the contest with a 3-1-0 mark after defeating Pepperdine, 1-0, on Sept. 9 at UD's Bajuan Field.
The Flyer defense has allowed just one goal in four matches this season, as goalkeeper Niki Reed has accumulated 21 saves with three shutouts.
UD has gotten goals from four different players, including game winners from Jerica DeWolfe, Lauren Maybury and Lauren MacCormick.
Head coach Mike Tucker, a 1969 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, is in his 13th season as a head coach, all at Dayton. He holds a 175-70-11 record and is 2-1-0 against Cincinnati
STRONG START FOR FRESHMEN:
Cincinnati freshmen Logan Ballinger and Kendall Loggins have seen significant time each of the first three matches of 2007, making an immediate impact. Ballinger scored her first career goal in the 89th minute against Xavier, knotting the score and sending the match into overtime. Loggins leads the Bearcats with eight shots through two matches and picked up an assist on Melissa Bigg's goal against Miami (OH). Venessa Hardin, Emily Hebbeler, Camille Royer and Shauna Smith have each seen action early in 2007, with Hardin assisting on the game winner against Xavier.
UP NEXT:
UC returns to the road for weekend matches against Oakland (Sept. 14) and Wright State (Sept. 16). The next Bearcats home match is Sept. 21 against rival Louisville in the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
