TEEING OFF: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will open its 2007-08 season this week, heading south to compete in Louisville's annual Cardinal Cup. The event figures to be highly competitive, with 12 of the 17 teams ranked in the top 100 in the final Golfweek rankings from last year. The format for the event is 36 holes on Monday (Sept. 17) and the final 18 one day later. A shotgun start will get the action underway each day at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Cardinal Cup features 17 of the finest squads from the midwest and southern regions of the United States, all converging on the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. The BIG EAST will be well represented in the event with four of the league's seven golf-sponsoring schools in the field. All but five of the teams finished in the top 100 of last season's final Golfweek rankings. The field with each's 2006-07 final ranking includes: Augusta State (64), Cincinnati (116), Coastal Carolina (71), East Tennessee State (68), Eastern Kentucky (163), Georgia State (94), Illinois State (109), Louisville (32), Maryland (51), Memphis (72), Middle Tennessee State (90), Missouri State (88), Notre Dame (62), Southern Miss (160), USF (48), Western Carolina (96) and Xavier (115). Louisville is the defending champion of the event.
THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats' first line-up of the 2007-08 season features many familiar faces with four of the five players returning from last year. Seniors Hillery Wilson and Allison Mayborg, staples in the UC line-up throughout their careers, lead the way and are joined by juniors Marianne Erb and Sarah Stamper. Rounding out the group of five is freshman Bambee Dela Paz. UC has also entered sophomore Ashley Combs and freshman Jenny Linville as individuals in the tournament.
LAST YEAR'S CARDINAL CUP: Allison Mayborg shot a final round 78 to secure a tie for 36th, leading the Bearcats during the closing round of the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup. Mayborg's play helped Cincinnati to an 11th place finish in the team standings. UC's lowest score of the day came from Hillery Wilson as she finished with a 74. Wilson wasn't eligible for a finishing position after withdrawing from the first round of play. As a team, the Bearcats shot a 313, one shot better than its round two total for its lowest score of the tournament. Louisville maintained its five-stroke lead over Augusta State to finish at 892 and win the team title.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: With six players, including five seniors, departed from last year's roster, head coach Janet Carl went the international route to fill the voids. Carl added Bambee Dela Paz from the Philippines, along with Australia native Kate Moore. That duo joins local product Jenny Linville (West Chester, Ohio) as newcomers to the UC roster.
