TEEING OFF: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team will kick off its season beginning on Monday, Sept. 24 when it takes part in the Cleveland State Invitational. Coming off of a sixth place finish at last season's BIG EAST Championship, the Bearcats return just two letterwinners from that squad. The season-opening CSU Invitational will consist of 54 holes, played over two days at the Sand Ridge Golf Course in Chardon, Ohio.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2007 Cleveland State Invitational kicks off at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24 with the first 36 holes of a 54-hole event. Eastern Michigan is the defending champion of the event, but will not be on hand to defend its title. A total of 11 teams will converge on Chardon, Ohio's Sand Ridge Golf Course for this year's event. Cincinnati should be in a position for a top finish as it has the second-highest Golfweek ranking from 2006-07 of the tournament participants. The tournament field, with final 2006-07 Golfweek rankings includes: Butler (259), Cincinnati (209), Cleveland State (212), Dayton (247), Loyola-Chicago (236), North Dakota State (226), Oakland (215), South Dakota State (176), Southern Illinois (213), St. Joseph's (210) and Youngstown State (257).
THE LINE-UP: With just two returning letterwinners from last season, coach Doug Martin welcomes an almost entirely new team to the links this year. Both of the returnees, juniors Albert Fernandez and Blake Tucker, will compete at Cleveland State. Junior Ryan Heinly saw limited action last year, while Ryan Cahill redshirted in his first year at UC. Rounding out the season-opening line-up will be a pair of true freshmen in Joe Kastelic and Kane Volsky.
WELCOME ABOARD: Now in his second year as the men's coach at UC, Doug Martin finally feels like he has players making up the Bearcat roster. A total of seven true freshmen and one redshirt freshman have joined the program this year, with only juniors Albert Fernandez, Ryan Heinly and Blake Tucker returning. New to the UC line-up this year will be redshirt freshmen Ryan Cahill and true freshmen Tyler Bice, Ken Bickle, Joe Kastelic, Alex Lanning, Jarryd Lentz, Nick Proud and Kane Volsky. Cahill, Kastelic and Volksy will all compete in UC's season-opening tournament at Cleveland State.
