TEEING OFF: Following a win in its season-opening event, the University of Cincinnati men's golf team is back on the links on Monday, Oct. 1 taking part in the Xavier Invitational. The two-day event will be played at the Oasis Golf Club in nearby Loveland, Ohio. UC, under the leadership of second-year coach Doug Martin, grabbed the tournament title at the Cleveland State Invitational last week.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 14th annual Xavier Invitational will be a 54-hole, two-day event contested at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. After six years of being played at Kings Island, the event moved to Oasis in 2004. A full field of 17 teams from across the country will be on hand to compete for the title. Participating schools with current Golfweek rankings include: Akron (56), Bowling Green (51), Campbell (212), Cincinnati (N/A), Davidson (N/A), Eastern Kentucky (31), George Washington (231), Marquette (N/A), Marshall (171), New Orleans (48), Ohio (204), St. Mary's (40), San Francisco (149), Western Carolina (61), Western Kentucky (109), Wright State (194) and Xavier (132). For the first time since the inaugural event in 1993, Xavier won the title last year, winning by a dominating 10 shots over Austin Peay.
THE LINE-UP: With one tournament win on their resume, coach Doug Martin's Bearcats will utilize the same lineup that it used to capture the Cleveland State Invitational at Xavier. Freshman Joe Kastelic (72.0 average) made a big splash in his first collegiate event, shooting an opening round 69 and placing third overall. Joining Kastelic at Xavier will be juniors Albert Fernandez (74.7) and Blake Tucker (75.7), along with true freshman Kane Volsky (76.0) and redshirt freshman Ryan Cahill (77.7).
LAST TIME OUT: Through 36 holes, UC trailed by four shots. Through 45 holes, they were nine back. By tournament's end, the Bearcats had pulled off a great comeback, winning the Cleveland State Invitational by four shots. UC shot a round of 292, tying for the lowest mark in the entire tournament to stake claim to its first team title of the 2007-08 season. Freshman Joe Kastelic continued his steady play in his collegiate debut, grabbing third place with a final round score of 74. Kastelic wasn't the only hero of the tournament for the Bearcats. Junior Blake Tucker and true freshman Kane Volsky both carded their best rounds of the tournament with identical scores of 71 in the finale. Tucker earned a 16th place finish, while Volsky was 23rd. Junior Albert Fernandez was the second-highest placed Bearcat finishing 12th.
