LOVELAND, Ohio---Behind a 37th place finish from junior Albert Fernandez, the University of Cincinnati men's golf team wrapped up action at the Xavier Invitational on Tuesday with a finish of 16th in the team standings. Fernandez shot a final round score of 75 to secure his finish.
"I am disappointed in our finish," UC men's coach Doug Martin said. "But with that said, this is one of the two or three toughest fields we will play in all year. Seven teams in this tournament were NCAA Regional teams last year and we beat five of them in the first round. A highlight for us was beating Xavier in the first round. We have alot of respect for the Xavier program and they are at a place we hope to be very, very soon."
Fernandez finished the tournament with a score of 217, just two shots ahead of redshirt freshman Ryan Cahill. Junior Blake Tucker posted the best score of the day for the Bearcats with a round of 72.
Marquette held onto the top spot in the team standings, winning the event by two shots over Western Carolina. Brent Long of 13th place Western Kentucky took individual honors with a score of 203, one shot better than Akron's Colin Clemente.
The Bearcats return to the links beginning on Sunday (Oct. 7) as they compete in the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in Normal, Ill. The tournament will be hosted by Illinois State.
