CINCINNATI -- Junior forward Mike Williams, who was preparing for his first season on the court for the University of Cincinnati, will miss the 2007-08 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in preseason workouts this week.
"Our entire team feels for Mike today," said head coach Mick Cronin. "This is a very unfortunate injury due to the fact that Mike will miss his second consecutive season. Mike is the hardest working guy in our program and will recover from this at full strength because of his positive attitude. I also feel bad for our fans because I know they were looking forward to watching Mike play this year. We will miss not having him in the line-up, but our guys remain very excited about getting ready for the season and building our program back to national prominence. "
Williams, a 6-7, 230-pound native of Camden, Ala., sat out last season at UC after transferring from the University of Texas. As a Longhorn, Williams played in 58 games over two years, averaging 2.7 points and 3.4 rebounds.
Williams earned McDonald's All-American recognition in 2004 as a senior at Wilcox Central High School. He was a third-team all-American choice by Parade Magazine and garnered honorable mention all-America honors from Slam Magazine. A two-time Alabama Class 5A Player of the Year, Williams averaged 28 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks as a senior.
