CINCINNATI, OH - Kristin May (Hudson, OH/Walsh Jesuit) scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lead the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 2-1 BIG EAST victory against Rutgers on a beautiful Sunday (Oct. 14) afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats (5-8-1, 2-5-0) move into a sixth-place tie in the BIG EAST National Division with six points.
For the second straight match, UC got on the board first, as Kendall Loggins (Naperville, IL/Naperville) - the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week - scored her fourth goal of the season. After a Rutgers foul about 35 yards out, Melissa Bigg (Limehouse, Ontario/Acton) sent a free kick onto the head of Erin MacDonald (St. Catharine's, Ontario/West Park Secondary). Her snap header was saved by Rutgers goalkeeper Erin Guthrie, but Loggins was there to put home the rebound and give UC a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the match.
Rutgers equalized in the 41st minute when Gina Demaio struck a perfect shot from 30 yards out into the upper left corner for her fifth goal of the season.
The match looked to be headed for overtime, but May delivered the match winner with just 1:45 left in regulation. Goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) sent a punt into the Rutgers half, where MacDonald headed it on to a streaking May. Her right-footed blast beat Guthrie to her right for the final tally.
Kaminski made eight saves on the afternoon.
MacDonald leads the team with seven assists and 15 points, both of which rank in the top 10 in the BIG EAST. Bigg, Loggins, and MacDonald are each tied for the team lead with four goals.
UC wraps up the home portion of its 2007 schedule next weekend, welcoming USF on Friday, Oct. 19 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Prior to the match, the Bearcats will honor Gigi Ernst (Plain City, OH/Bishop Watterson) and Erica Maine (Colorado Springs, CO/Rampart) in senior night ceremonies. The Marquette Golden Eagles then pay a visit on Sunday, Oct. 21 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Gettler Stadium.
