CINCINNATI - Erin MacDonald (St. Catharine's, Ontario/West Park Secondary) scored twice in leading the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a dominating 3-0 win against USF on Friday night (Oct. 19) on Senior Night at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats (6-8-1, 3-5-0) moved closer to earning their first-ever BIG EAST Tournament berth, moving into a fifth-place tie in the National Division with Georgetown with nine points.
Prior to the match, UC seniors Gigi Ernst (Plain City, OH/Bishop Watterson), Erica Maine (Colorado Springs, CO/Rampart), and Tricia Gardner (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) were honored in the annual senior night ceremonies.
MacDonald got the scoring started early, tallying her fifth goal of the season on a header in the eighth minute. Kristin May (Hudson, OH/Walsh Jesuit) bent her corner kick onto the head of Kendall Loggins (Naperville, IL/Naperville North), who flicked a pass on to MacDonald for the finish and the 1-0 lead.
In the 17th minute, UC built its lead to 2-0 on May's third goal of the season. Jenn Johannigman (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) found May about 35 yards out on the right side. May's right-footed blast snuck into the upper left corner for her third goal in the last three matches.
Just eight minutes later, MacDonald struck again, off a give and go with May. UC's leading scorer half-volleyed a May through ball past USF keeper Mallory Lofton-Malachi for the final goal of the match.
In the 29th minute, USF earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but Lindsey Brauer's shot caromed off the left post and was cleared by the UC defense.
Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) posted the first UC shut out of the season, making seven saves.
UC scored three goals on Lofton-Malachi, who had allowed just four in six BIG EAST matches entering the weekend.
Gardner played in her first match as a Bearcat, seeing 17 minutes of action.
The Bearcats will wrap up the regular season home schedule when they host Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
