BOSTON---The University of Cincinnati will be represented in the World Series again this year as former Bearcat Kevin Youkilis and his Boston Red Sox teammates will battle the Colorado Rockies, beginning tonight (Oct. 24) in the Fall Classic. The Red Sox will be in search of their second Championship since 2004.
Youkilis has been a key contributor for the Red Sox in 2007, especially during the post-season. In Boston's come-from-behind win in the American League Championship Series against Cleveland, Youkilis set or tied six ALCS records. Among the marks Youkilis now holds are runs scored (10), batting average in a seven-game series (.500) and slugging percentage in a seven-game series (.929). The Cincinnati native also shares the records for hits (14) and most singles in a seven-game series (nine).
During the regular season, Youkilis appeared in 145 games for the Red Sox, batting .288 with 35 doubles, 16 home runs and 83 RBI.
"It has been very exciting for me watching Kevin during the postseason," UC head coach Brian Cleary said of his former player. "Obviously, we are rooting for him to do well and get that second ring."
UC is also set to honor Youkilis as he will be formally inducted into the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 1. Youkilis played for Cincinnati from 1998-2001, before being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2001 draft. At UC, Youkilis was a three-time all-conference selection, including a pair of first-team honors. He was also lauded as an all-American following his senior year and is a member of the Conference USA all-Decade team. A .366 career hitter, Youkilis holds or shares 10 Cincinnati season or career marks. He is also ranked among the C-USA leaders in career RBI, hits, home runs, doubles, runs and total bases. Youkilis will become the 16th member of the UC Hall of Fame from the baseball program.
GoBEARCATS.com will have complete coverage of Youkilis' run to a ring, including game-by-game recaps of his performance. Fox television and WXIX-TV Channel 19 locally will carry all the World Series action.
