ORLANDO, Fla.---Juniors Albert Fernandez and Blake Tucker shared 12th place, helping the University of Cincinnati men's golf team earn a Top five finish in its final tournament of the fall season, the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge. The event, pitting eight teams from the BIG EAST and three from the Mid-American Conference concluded on Sunday after weather suspended play early on the opening day of competition.
Fernandez got the event off to a great start, shooting a round of 71, before slipping to an 80 in the second round. The native of Spain bounced back with a final round 72 to end the event at 223. Tucker struggled in the opener with a 79, but shot consecutive rounds of 72 to end the event tied with Fernandez.
Cincinnati's second round represented its third-best round of the season as it shot a round of 291. The Bearcats finished the tournament tied for fifth with BIG EAST rival Connecticut with identical scores of 900. Marquette, behind a 10-under performance by individual medalist Mike Sickle, won by five shots over DePaul with a total of 866.
The Bearcats are now idle until Spring when they open the second half of the slate on Feb. 24-26 at The Cuthbert Cup in Kiawah Island, S.C.
