CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati women's soccer players Gigi Ernst (Plain City, OH/Bishop Watterson) and Kim Sykes (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) were named to the 2007 College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District first and second teams, respectively.
Ernst, who earned third-team honors in 2005, holds a 3.83 grade point average as a double major in finance and accounting. The senior defender was a four-year starter for the Bearcats and a 2007 co-captain. She started all but one match in her career, playing in 71 matches at central defense.
Sykes, a junior defender and two-year team captain, earned her second straight CoSIDA honor. She was also named to the second team last season. A workhorse along the UC backline, she has started all 54 matches of her UC career and played over 95 percent of the team's minutes. She has one goal and two assists to her credit.
District IV, into which UC falls, consists of NCAA Division I universities in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. This is the third straight year a Bearcat has been honored.
The teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team. First-team selections have the opportunity to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team, which will be released on Nov. 20.
