CINCINNATI - Meridy Glenn has decided not to seek renewal of her contract as the head women's soccer coach at the University of Cincinnati which expires on Dec. 31, 2007, Director of Athletics Mike Thomas announced today. Glenn coached the Bearcats for 25 seasons from 1983-2007.
"Coach Glenn did an outstanding job of laying a foundation and building a base for women's soccer at UC," said Thomas. "Meridy has allowed us the chance to move ahead and advance the program she built. She put her heart and soul into the job and she is highly respected as a professional in the community and in the coaching ranks."
Glenn led the 2007 Bearcats to a 6-10-2 record overall and finished 3-7-1 in the BIG EAST Conference National Division, missing the conference tournament by four points.
She was named UC's third head women's soccer coach in 1983 and owns a career record of 255-184-36 (the second most wins in the NCAA history by a female coach). She led the Bearcats to six NCAA Tournament berths, including the school's first in 1983 as a rookie head coach, and won three regular-season conference championships and five tournament titles - her last of each coming in 2002 as a member of Conference USA.
"I wish nothing but the best for the UC athletics program and the University," said Glenn," and especially for my loyal, talented staff, Becki, Stefani, Theresa, and Ken, and of course, to the very special BIG EAST players that are on the team. We have built a great alumni base and I know they will continue to be BEARCATS and support the program. I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for my professional life and for my family."
In her career, she coached five NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) All-Americans and 42 all-conference performers, including UC Athletics Hall of Famer and two-time C-USA Player of the Year Paulette Angilecchia (1993-96). Her players not only excelled on the field, they were some of the best in the classroom as 75 earned conference academic recognition.
A former collegiate soccer player at Brown University, Glenn started her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater in 1981. Glenn spent two years at Brown before coming to Cincinnati.
A search for her successor will begin immediately.
