CINCINNATI--The Augusta Sports Council today announced Kevin Huber (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) is a finalist for the 2007 Ray Guy Award. Huber, along with Durant Brooks of Georgia Tech and Brett Kern of Toledo are the three finalists as determined by a vote of the members Ray Guy Award National Selection Committee.
Huber is leading the nation in punting, averaging 46.5 yards on 49 punts this season. Huber established a single-game record with a 59.7 yards per punt average on three efforts in the 40-14 win over Marshall. He has carded 17 punts inside the opposition's 20-yard line and four have been downed on the opposition's 1-yard line.
The award is named for Thomson, Ga. resident Ray Guy, a 2004 College Football Hall of Fame Inductee and perennial candidate for the National Football League Hall of Fame. Guy, who played with the Oakland Raiders from 1973-86.
The Committee will cast a second vote to determine the recipient of the 2007 Ray Guy Award. The recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6. The award will be presented at the 2008 Greater Augusta Sports Award Gala.
Each of the punters on the list was evaluated on his overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line, average return yardage, and percentage not returned.
Huber and the Bearcats conclude the 2007 regular season on Saturday night when they tangle with Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on ESPNU.
