CINCINNATI -- ­Senior pitcher A.J. Upton has taken the leadership role of captain of the University of Cincinnati's baseball team for the 2008 season.

A graduate of Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School, Upton is listed 11th in Bearcats history with six career saves. As a junior, the 6-4, 208-pound right-hander battled through injury to make 16 appearances out of the bullpen. Upton finished 0-1, striking out 10 in 14 and one-third innings of work in 2007.

During his sophomore campaign Upton evolved into an integral part of the UC bullpen, with six saves which good for fourth in the BIG EAST Conference.

Upton, who appeared in 22 games in 2006, finished the year with a 3.86 earned run average, while opponents hit just .214 against him. The Cincinnati native posted a 2-2 record for the year.

The Bearcats open the 2008 season with a three-game series at Miami (FL), beginning on Feb. 22, before opening the home schedule with a 16-game homestand at Marge Schott Stadium. -- GoBEARCATS.com --
