CINCINNATI - During the 2007 football season, the University of Cincinnati Department Of Athletics teamed up with American Cornhole to begin a new pre-game tailgate tradition prior to UC home football games.
Over a six week period, 79 of the area's best cornhole players competed to be named the first Bearcat campus champion. After 14 semi-finalists were eliminated at halftime of the Jan. 19 UC-Pittsburgh game, only two players remained.
Eleven-year old Shawn Guy stunned the Fifth Third Arena crowd at halftime of the Jan. 23 game against Connecticut to become the first ever University of Cincinnati Cornhole Campus Champion. Guy defeated fellow Bearcat fanatic Ken Holliday 19-2 in the finals to win the campus championship belt and give himself the opportunity to defend his title in 2008.
"I enjoy cornhole because anyone at any age can play and compete," Guy said after winning the title. "I want to take the championship belt to school with me!"
Guy continued the family tradition of Bearcat pre-game Cornhole dominance. Shawn's father Matt Guy won the 2006 inaugural Bearcat Cornhole doubles tournament on October 22, 2006.
