, - The lacrosse team opened its inaugural season with a 20-4 loss against No. 10 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17) at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

"We were able to get all of our players into the inaugural game and they played hard and never gave up," head coach Lellie Swords said. "The score is not truly indicative of the effort we put forth."

Lynsey Burton (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) and Steph Cox (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) each scored a pair of goals for the Bearcats (0-1), which played all 19 players on the roster in the historic program-opener.

Vanderbilt (1-0) sprinted out to a quick 8-0 lead with three goals coming from Sarah Downing and a pair from Margie Curran.

Lynsey Burton scored the first goal in program history at the 22:10 mark on a free position shot.

added her second goal at the 3:45 mark to bring the score to 13-2 heading into halftime.

Steph Cox tallied for the Bearcats four minutes into the second half on a feed from Natatlie Starvaggi (, / Dame).

The duo hooked up again for the Bearcats' fourth goal with 3:34 left in the game.

The Bearcats made 13 saves on the day, with Jen Mott (/Sycamore) leading the way with 10 saves. Haley Marvine (, /) made three saves in the second half.

The Bearcats will play the first home game in school history next weekend when they welcome LeMoyne to Nippert Stadium for a 2 p.m. start on Feb. 23.
