EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team continued to garner high marks on day three of the BIG EAST Championship. In total, UC posted four swimmers that finished in the top six, in Friday's events. With one day to go, the men hold on to sixth place with 235 points, while the women are in ninth place accumulating 101 points.
Sophomore Elinore de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum) captured sixth place in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 55.84. It is the women's best mark of the meet. The foursome of Shannon McCarthy (Valencia, CA/William S. Hart), Abi Bower (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington North), Elinore de Jong and Lange Gilby (Cleves, OH/Taylor) scored an eighth place finish in the 400 yard medley relay. Their time of 3:53.86 was a season-best, while also cutting almost two seconds off of their preliminary time.
The highlight of the day for the men was the second and third place finish posted by Jeremy Peter (Obernai, France/Lycee Freppel) and Jakub Carda (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnasium). Their times of 3:51.02 and 3:54.23, respectively, in the 400 IM netted UC 33 points in the event. Both of the times were NCAA 'B' cut marks, and was a season-best time for both swimmers.
Josh Schneider (Cincinnati,OH/Taylor) continues to post high finishes. His time of 48.06 in the 100 yard butterfly finished second behind Louisville's Adam Madarassy. Schneider's time qualified under the NCAA 'B' cut, and his preliminary time of 47.87 was his fastest mark of the season, just narrowly missing another Cincinnati school record.
Other BIG EAST scorers on the day include; Stephen Cunningham (Dublin,Ireland/Terenure College), Nathan Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) and Nate Kramer (Cincinnati, OH/New Richmond) in the 200 yard freestyle. Cunningham finished ninth in the event, while Williams placed eleventh. Kramer ended the event in 15th place.
