CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team played its first home game in school history, falling, 11-7, against Le Moyne on Saturday (Feb. 23) at frigid Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats (0-2) were led by junior Lindsey Marshall (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson), who posted a hat trick, her first three goals as a Bearcat.
"It was an exciting day and we were excited to be able to bring lacrosse to UC and to the city of Cincinnati," head coach Lellie Swords said. "It was a back-and-forth game and I think we learned a lot about our team. We are looking forward to getting back out here on Friday against Robert Morris."
Le Moyne (1-1) scored the first two goals of the game in the first seven minutes before Jess Kazaks (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) got UC on the board at the 13:51 mark of the first half off a feed from Jamie Desautels (Westminster, MD/Westminster).
Whitney Vecchio gave Le Moyne a 3-1 lead a couple minutes later, but the Bearcats scored the next two goals - Marshall's first and Stephanie Cox's (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) third of the season - to pull even at the 18:18 mark.
The teams traded goals before the Dolphins put four straight scores on the board to take an 8-4 lead.
Freshman Natalie Starvaggi (Loveland, OH/Mount Notre Dame) tallied her first career goal at the 9:08 mark of the second half. After a Le Moyne goal, Marshall and Lynsey Burton (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) each tallied to cut the lead to 9-7 with 16 minutes to play.
The Bearcats would get no closer as the Dolphins scored the final two goals to post the 11-7 win.
UC held a 14-6 edge in draw controls, but turned the ball over 24 times, including 15 in the second half.
Jen Mott (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) made 15 saves, allowing just one goal on eight Dolphin free position attempts.
Vecchio and Rebekah Elmer each posted three goals for the Dolphins and the goalie combination of Alexandra Dwyer and Samantha Falcone posted 17 saves, each playing one half.
The Bearcats will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 29, as they host Robert Morris at 4 p.m. in Nippert Stadium.
