, - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team teed off the spring portion of its schedule today at the Cuthbert Cup on

The team opened up the tournament with a first-round team score of 312. Junior Albert Fernandez led the way with an even-par 72 followed by freshman Joe Kastelic with a +2, 74. Junior Blake Tucker, freshman Ryan Cahill, and freshman Kane Volsky rounded out the team with scores of 82 (+10), 84 (+12), and 85 (+13), respectively.

"We came into the weekend expecting to hit a little rust off," said head coach Doug Martin. "I am a little disappointed but realize this was our first time the team has been on grass since the fall. We will learn from our mistakes and get better each day."

The three-day tournament is named in honor of longtime Kiawah Island Golf Resort director of golf Tommy Cuthbert, who passed away in 2006. Cuthbert was a supporter of both men's and women's collegiate golf and his efforts will be remembered with the inaugural tournament.

The eight-team men's field played Osprey Point Golf Club (par-72, 6834 yards) on Sunday, and will then play at Cougar Point Golf Club (par-72, 6757 yards) on Monday, Feb. 25. Both men's and women's teams will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Osprey Point.

The two courses are part of five which make up Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which is located on the beaches. Osprey Point's architect was legendary course designer Tom Fazio while another golf legend, Gary Player, redesigned Cougar Point in 1996.
