ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Lindsey Marshall (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) scored four goals and the University of Cincinnati defense allowed only three goals in the second half as the Bearcats earned their first victory in school history, 12-7, over Saint Mary's in Annapolis, Md.
Cincinnati (1-3) tallied equal shots, 27, with Saint Mary's (0-4) but the Bearcats held a distinct advantage on free position attempts, finishing the game 5-for-7. It is the first time UC has scored in double digits and the first time the Bearcats have held their opponent to single digit scoring.
Saint Mary's rattled off three goals before Marshall scored her first goal of the game for Cincinnati off an assist from Shannon Lynes (Ellicott City, Md./Ohio University). Marshall scored an unassisted goal before Saint Mary's scored on a free position attempt. Jamie Desautels (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored her first career goal off a feed from Lauren Kelly (Timonium, Md./Ohio University) and the Bearcats tied the game, 4-4, when Jess Kazaks (Patchogue, N.Y./Ohio University) netted a free position shot with 2:16 remaining in the first half.
UC came out with renewed intensity in the second half as Desautels gave the Bearcats their first and final lead of the game, 5-4, on a free position attempt. Allison Bell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored her first career goal and Desautels tacked on another goal for her first career hat trick, giving the Bearcats a 7-4 advantage with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game. Marshall and Natalie Starvaggi (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) each notched unassisted goals after Saint Mary's scored on free position attempts. Saint Mary's put its final goal on the board at the 11:40 mark of the second half and Marshall, Starvaggi, and Kazaks each netted goals with under 10 minutes left to play. The Bearcats took 18 shots in the second half after finishing the first half with nine, and outshot Saint Mary's 18-15 in the second half.
Cincinnati's Jen Mott (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) played the entire game in goal and finished with eight saves.
UC will play Navy at noon on Saturday, March 8 in Annapolis, Md.
