URBANA, Ill. - The University of Cincinnati traveled west to compete in the Illini Spring Classic hosted by the University of Illinois. The event was shortened from 36-holes to 18-holes on the first day due to inclement weather. Despite the bad weather, the women's team was able to shoot a 325 on the day, good for fourth place in the 15-team field.
Pacing the Bearcats was freshman Bambee Dela Paz (Caloocan City, Phillipines/Miriam College) who shot an opening round plus-six, 78 on the day. Her efforts placed her in a tie for second place, two shots behind Illinois' Seul Ki Park who shot a 76 in the opening round. Dela Paz is coming off of her first collegiate win last week at the UC Spring Invitational.
Behind Dela Paz were Hillery Wilson (Hudson, OH/Hudson) and Kate Moore (Shepparton, Australia/Goulburn Valley Grammar School), each shot an opening round 82 for the day, placing them in a tie for 21st place. Moore shot an one over on the front nine but could not capitalize on the back finishing with a 45 coming home.
Rounding out the day for UC was Allison Mayborg (Monroe, OH/Ursuline Academy) who shot a 83 in the first round. One shot behind her sits Marianne Erb (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) with a 84 on the day.
Play continues on Saturday (Apr. 5) with the classic set for 36-holes.
