Former Bearcats Mary (Danner) Wineberg and David Payne and current student-athlete Josh Schneider will compete at the United States Olympic Trials in the coming weeks in their respective sports. Wineberg and Payne will be in Eugene, Ore., for the USA Track and Field trials, while Schneider will participate in the USA Swimming trials in Omaha, Neb.
Wineberg, a 2002 graduate of UC, is currently ranked fourth in the world in the 400 meter dash. She won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay last fall at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, and will seek a spot on the US Olympic team in both the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay.
Payne, a bronze medalist in the 110 hurdles at the 2007 World Championships, is ranked No. 18 in the world in the event. A two-time all-American at UC, Payne finished fourth at the U.S. Outdoor Championships last season.
Schneider, a 2007-08 all-American in the 50 freestyle, set school marks in the 50 and 100 freestyles this season. The sophomore won the BIG EAST title in the 50 free and is ranked No. 17 in the U.S. going into the trials.
The USA Track and Field Olympic Trials begin on Friday, June 27, at historic Hayward Field. Wineberg is slated to run on Sunday, June 29 and Monday, June 30 in quarterfinals and semifinals. The 400 meter finals are set for Thursday, July 3. Payne will run in the 110 hurdles on Saturday, July 5. The semifinals and finals are slated for Sunday, July 6.
The USA Swimming and Diving Olympic Trials runs from June 29-July 6 at the Qwest Center. Schneider will swim in preliminaries on Friday, July 4. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday evening with the finals taking place on Saturday, July 5.
