CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team came from behind to defeat Central Michigan in exhibition on Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats found the back of the net four times to come out on top with a 4-1 victory in their final exhibition of 2008.
Cincinnati fell behind early thanks to the foot of the Chippewas forward Ali Nichols. Nichols received the ball from Sarah Burns and scored inside the box in the 27th minute. The score would remain in the favor of CMU as the two teams headed into halftime. Central Michigan outshot the Bearcats 6-4 for the half.
The tide switched when the two teams headed back onto the pitch in the second half as UC became the aggressor. In the 56th minute forward Erin MacDonald (St. Catharine's, Ont./West Park Secondary) recorded the equalizer after freshman Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) stole the ball at the top of the 18, dribbled in and crossed to an oncoming MacDonald.
The scoring would continue for the Bearcats as Morrissey settled the ball inside the 18 and touched it back to Kristin May (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who fired a shot to the back corner in the 75th minute, giving UC the lead.
In the 83rd minute senior Jenn Johannigman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) took the corner kick and found Morrissey streaking to the net to record the header. Five minutes later May, 30-yards out on the near side, bent a ball around the post to go ahead by three goals.
Cincinnati head coach Michelle Salmon believed the way her team came out in the second half was the difference in the match. "In the second half we came out on another level. We were much more aggressive in the half and when we play like that we can compete with anyone in the country. In the first half our team was thinking more rather than reacting and that led to us being down at half."
The Bearcats outshot the Central Michigan 10-1 in the second half and 16-5 for the match. UC also had the advantage in corner kicks by a 7-6 margin.
The Bearcats will next take the field on August 22, when they welcome Bowling Green for the regular season opener. The match is set to take place at 7 p.m.
