WEST HARRISON, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati football team closed out its two-a-day practice sessions with a pair of two-hour workouts under sunny skies Friday at the Higher Ground Conference Center.
The Bearcats, who will hold their final workout at Higher Ground Saturday before returning to campus, spent the majority of practice in individual and position drills before closing out the morning session with several periods of 11-on-11.
The defensive backs and wide receivers spent extensive time in 1-on-1 drills both on a long field and in the red zone. The Bearcats also worked on special teams with various kickoff and kick return coverages highlighted.
Head coach Brian Kelly and his staff have been tinkering with the defensive backfield, moving DeAngelo Smith to free safety and working primiarily with Mike Mickens and Brandon Underwood at cornerbacks.
"We have a pretty crucial day and a half here," Kelly said. "We're trying to get a sense and feel for some of the position changes we've made in the past few days. Obviously, DeAngelo (Smith) is playing a lot of safety. We want to find out who that other guy next to him is going to be. We're still very fluid defensively. If we lined up tomorrow, DeAngelo Smith, Mike Mickens and Brandon Underwood would line up for us. The fourth slot is up in the air.
UC opens the 2008 season on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against Eastern Kentucky in Nippert Stadium. For tickets and information, call 1-877-CATS-TIX or log on to www.CATSTIX.com.
