BEIJING - Former Bearcat David Payne earned a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2008 Olympic Games on Thursday evening at National Stadium, finishing with a season-best time of 13.17 seconds.

Payne, a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, posted the second-fastest time in the finals round behind Dayron Robles of Cuba. David Oliver from the United States finished in third place, one one-hundreth of a second behind Payne.

Payne is the first UC track and field athlete and the sixth Bearcat to earn an Olympic medal. Payne joins George Wilson (1964 gold medal - basketball), Oscar Robertson (1960 gold medal - basketball), Michelle MacPherson (1984 bronze medal - 4x100 medley relay - swimming), Jenny Kemp (1972 gold medal - 4x100 freestyle relay - swimming) and Tina Gustafsson (1980 silver medal - 4x100 freestyle relay - swimming) as Bearcat athletes that have stood on the Olympic podium.
