BEIJING - Former University of Cincinnati women's track and field athlete Mary Wineberg ran the opening leg of the women's 4x400 meter relay finals at National Stadium Saturday evening, leading Team USA to a season-best gold medal time of 3:18.54. The United States finished 0.28 seconds ahead of Russia.

Wineberg ran the opening leg of the relay and was followed in order by Monique Henderson, Natasha Hastings and Sanya Richards.

Wineberg is the second former Bearcat to earn a medal in the 2008 Olympics after David Payne picked up a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles on Thursday. Wineberg is the fourth UC athlete to earn a gold medal in the Olympics, joining George Wilson (1964 gold medal - basketball), Oscar Robertson (1960 gold medal - basketball), and Jenny Kemp (1972 gold medal - 4x100 freestyle relay - swimming). Former Bearcats athletes Michelle MacPherson (1984 - 4x100 medley relay) and David Payne have worn silver medals, while Tina Gustafsson won a bronze medal in swimming in the 4x100 freestyle relay in 1980.
