CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team opened up the fall season this past weekend competing at the Bowling Green State University Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. The invitational was the Bearcats first competition under new tennis coach Angela Wilson.
Newcomer Saflyya Ismail (Mainville, Ohio) turned in a strong performance for UC in the No. 1 Singles flight making it to the finals before losing. She knocked off Bowling Green's Kelsey Jakupcin (7-5, 6-0) and Youngstown State's Sarah Lynch (6-3, 6-1) before losing to Zaruhi Harutyunyan from Akron (6-1, 6-0).
Freshman Jessica Wise (Ashland, Ky.), also earned her first win at UC and finished fourth in the No. 6 singles flight. Her win (7-5, 6-3) came against Gretchen Cloern from Youngstown State.
Ismail and Wise teamed up for the Bearcats top doubles performance, winning the No. 3 flight. The pair knocked off teams from Akron (8-1), Xavier (9-7) and Cleveland State (8-4).
"Preseason is a time for us as coaches to see areas in our games we need to work on," said Wilson. "The team saw those areas this weekend and we will come back, work hard, and get better."
UC plays next in two weeks when it hosts the Queen City Invitational on Oct. 3-5 at the Queen City Racquet Club in Sharonville, Ohio.
