CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team lost, 6-0, to No. 1/1 Notre Dame on Sunday at Gettler Stadium in BIG EAST Conference action. The Bearcats (5-5-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) were outshot 19-7 by the Fighting Irish (10-0-0, 3-0-0 BIG EAST).
Notre Dame got the game-winner in the 27th minute when Kerri Hanks took a feed from Carrie Dew at the top of the box and drilled the ball from the left into the right side of the goal, past UC's goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).
Melissa Henderson came off the bench for the Fighting Irish and scored the first goal of her hat trick in the 35th minute, taking a pass from Michele Weissenhofer and beating Kaminski. Henderson scored again in the 72nd minute, and in the 76th minute as Notre Dame poured in three goals over a five minute span.
Courtney Rosen and Haley Ford each tacked on unassisted goals for the Fighting Irish.
"I don't think the score is really indicative of the game," said first year head coach, Michelle Salmon. "We did some really nice things and had some good chances. The difference between us and Notre Dame is opportunities presented themselves in the box for them and they finished it, and for us, we couldn't find the back of the net. If we find the back of the net early and it's a 2-1 game, it's a different game. As the game went on and it was 2-0 well into the second half we tried to stretch the game a little bit and that's where we got exposed. I've always told our players we aren't going to lose a game 2-0 trying to keep it close. We're going to lose a game trying to win and today, I'm really proud of the way we played."
In the 85th minute UC nearly got on the scoreboard when Chelsea Kindschuh (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) flicked a shot that was just wide of the near post.
Notre Dame's Kelsey Lysander was credited with the win in goal while Kaminski finished the game with four saves.
Cincinnati will play Providence on Friday, Oct. 3 in a 7 p.m. match at Gettler Stadium.
