CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati football player Connor Barwin (Hazel Park, Mich./U of Detroit Jesuit) was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5, the league office announced Monday.
Barwin, a defensive end, blocked two punts, including one that went out of the end zone for a safety, to give Cincinnati a lead it would not relinquish in the Bearcats' 33-10 win at Marshall. He added three tackles, a sack, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
UC (4-1), winners of three-straight games, opens up BIG EAST play against Rutgers Saturday at noon in Nippert Stadium. For tickets and information, call 1-877-CATS-TIX or log on to www.CATSTIX.com.
The football game can be seen on WKRC-TV (Channel 12) in Cincinnati and WKEF-TV (Channel 22) in Dayton. Following the football game at 4 p.m., 2008 UC Basketball Fan Jam will tip off as head coaches Mick Cronin and Kelley Hall debut their new squads.
The UC Basketball Fan Jam is free and open to the public and features general admission seating in Fifth Third Arena. The program will feature a fan vs. the women's basketball team three-point shooting contest, special videoboard presentations, a men's team scrimmage, and a team autograph session.
Both of the events are part of UC's All-American Homecoming 2008. For more information on how to take part in Homecoming Weekend, log onto www.uc.edu/homecoming.
