SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute as the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall, 2-0, in BIG EAST Conference action at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday night. Cincinnati (7-5-1, 3-2-1) earned its first shutout in five games with the win over Seton Hall (5-6-2, 1-4-1) and snapped a three game all-time winless streak against the Pirates.
The Bearcats outshot the Pirates, 14-12, for the game and each team took three corner kicks. Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) finished the game with six saves, earning her seventh victory of the season.
"We had a total team effort today," said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon. "Andrea Kaminski came up with a couple of big-time saves early in the second half."
Morrissey took a cross from Melissa Bigg (Limehouse, Ontario/Acton) to give UC the game-winner in the 74th minute. It was Morrissey's team-leading fourth goal of the season. Logan Ballinger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) knocked home her first goal of 2008 when she scored off an indirect kick by Lindsey Noteboom (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) in the 76th minute. Ballinger took a shot 9-yards away on the left side, sending the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.
"The goal from Julie Morrissey was well deserved, she worked hard for that goal," said Salmon. "We have talked all season about stepping up in key moments and doing a good job of finding the back of the net. The service from Lindsey Noteboom was world class and Logan Ballinger just stepped up to the moment."
UC was slightly delayed to the game by New Jersey traffic, but the Bearcats did not allow the pregame adjustments to affect their play. "Today I could not be happier with our performance," said Salmon. "We didn't start as quickly as I would have liked, but we finished with a shutout and I was very pleased with the overall performance."
Cincinnati continues its road trip with a 1 p.m. match at Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 12.
