Senior Jessie Nevitt, a middle blocker on the Cincinnati volleyball team, was named the College of Applied Sciences Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October, Dean Richard Newrock of the College of Applied Sciences and Director of Athletics Mike Thomas, announced Friday.
Almost two-thirds of the way through the volleyball season, Nevitt has been a driving force behind the Bearcats success on the floor. Through Oct. 6, Nevitt ranked first in the conference in overall games and conference-only games in hitting percentage. She leads the team in blocks and this past week she moved into second place on the school's all-time total blocks and block assists charts.
"I am thrilled to be the first one from my college to earn this award. I love setting new standards. It's great," Nevitt said. "Grades are very important because they are what get you your future. I am very serious about academics." "You have to stay on top of things. I really use my planners. Each quarter I get the course syllabi and match test and key dates for the course with our traveling schedule and then sit with the instructors to arrange for alternative times to take exams and complete projects. As long as you plan and stay ahead everything seems to work," stated Jessie.
"Volleyball is all about team and I've found that carries over into the classroom. I really enjoy working with my classmates on our group projects. The other students in Hospitality Management have taught me a lot and really help me stay current during the season when we are traveling," said Nevitt.
Following her last co-op assignment this winter quarter, Jessie plans to return to her home in the Atlanta, Ga. to locate a position with one of the area's many restaurant operations.
Nevitt is a facilities and hospitality management major and holds a 3.318 GPA.
Each month of the academic year, the College of Applied Science, or CAS, will recognize a UC scholar-athlete who has demonstrated success both in the classroom and in an athletic arena. To be eligible for the award a scholar-athlete will have completed 2 years of education at UC, have a defined major, a cumulative grade point average (or GPA) of 3.25 or better, be in good standing, and have achieved athletic success.
"CAS is pleased to recognize scholar-athletes from across the university. Their dedication, competitive fire and ability to balance the demands of classroom, athletics and life parallel our own students," stated Dean Newrock. "Our students balance work and class schedules on a daily basis and are rewarded with top jobs upon graduation."
"On behalf of the College of Applied Science, I am honored to announce that CAS recognizes Jessie Nevitt as the October UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Being named first-team All-Big East each of the past three years and honorable-mention All-America for two years while maintaining an excellent GPA, Jessie has truly earned our admiration and we are really pleased to be able to honor one of our CAS student-athletes."
"With a GPA of 3.32 and her outstanding performance on the court. Jessie Nevitt continues to prove that scholarship and athletics do go `hand-in-hand' Her dedication to excellence on the field and in class is a model for all of our student-athletes," affirmed Mr. Thomas. "It is an honor to have one of our collegiate partners, CAS, stepping forward to recognize our scholar-athletes."
Each UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month will be awarded a plaque during the Athletics Recognition Banquet in the spring. Additionally, a tribute to the scholar-athlete will be made by the college during a home game of each active sport that month.
Nevitt and the Bearcats host a pair of BIG EAST matches this weekend against Seton Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and Villanova at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12.
