PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team played to a scoreless double overtime tie at No. 14 Rutgers on Sunday. It was the second consecutive game UC did not allow a goal and the first time since the 2006 season that the Bearcats had back-to-back shutouts.
"We are coming together at the right time," said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon. "We are doing great things as a team on both the attacking and defensive end of the field. To see us gel, and how we have progressed throughout the year - and that we continue to get better - is encouraging for the rest of our season. Our performance over the last four games has solidified us as a true contender in the BIG EAST."
Rutgers (10-3-1, 5-1-1) came into the weekend ranked No. 10 in the latest women's soccer RPI and ranked in multiple national polls, including Soccer America (No. 14), NSCAA/adidas (No. 21), Soccerbuzz (No. 23), Soccer Times (T-No. 23) and Top Drawer Soccer (No. 28). Cincinnati (7-5-2, 3-2-2) managed only five shots on goal but the UC defense was led by goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) who finished the game with six saves. Kaminski now has 10 career shutouts, tying her for ninth place in the school record book for career shutouts.
"This was a huge result for us," said Salmon. "Today we defended great, we never allowed Rutgers to get behind our defense. All of their shots were long range and Andrea Kaminski dealt with it brilliantly."
UC remains on the road, playing at USF at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17 before heading to Marquette for a 2 p.m. (EST) match on Sunday, Oct. 19.
