PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After helping propel the University of Cincinnati's volleyball team to a 3-0 record last week, freshman outside hitter Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while senior middle blocker Jessie Nevitt (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) earned BIG EAST honor roll recognition, the conference office announced today.
Harpenau had a breakout week for Cincinnati last week, which began with a kill-dig double-double versus Dayton on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Against the Flyers, Harpenau matched a then career-high with 12 kills and notched 10 digs. During the team's next match against Seton Hall on Friday, Oct. 10, Harpenau registered a new career high with 18 kills en route to a .333 hitting percentage. In the final match of the week versus Villanova, Harpenau put together a solid all-around performance with seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. For the week, the Cincinnati native averaged 3.08 kps, 2.18 dps and 0.50 bps.
Nevitt earned BIG EAST honor roll accolades this week after averaging 3.67 kps, 1.67 bps, and hitting at a .389 clip. In Cincinnati's five-set win over Dayton, Nevitt put down a team-high 16 kills and collected a season-high 12 total blocks. In the team's BIG EAST matches this weekend, Nevitt had another 16-kill performance against Seton Hall, before finishing the week with 12 kills versus Villanova. Against Dayton, Nevitt's 11 block assists shot her past assistant coach Myanna Hellsten into second place on Cincinnati's all-time block assists chart.
The Bearcats travel to Bowling Green, Ky. on Tuesday, Oct. 14 to face Western Kentucky at 9 p.m. (ET), before returning to BIG EAST action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. versus Louisville.
