TAMPA, Fla. - Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored the game-winning goal giving the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the University of South Florida on Friday night at the USF Soccer Stadium. The win pushed UC to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-2 in BIG EAST play, the most league wins for UC since the Bearcats joined the BIG EAST in 2005 and the most victories in a season since the 2002 campaign. USF's record fell to 7-5-3 overall and 3-4-1 in BIG EAST action.
"This is a great result for us against a very athletic South Florida team," said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon. "I'm pleased at the way we responded in the second half. We really played as a team, as a family and dominated in the second half. We got three points on the road and I'm pleased with that."
South Florida took the lead early, after Molly Stack scored from the far right corner in the 11th minute of the game. Cincinnati responded with an unassisted goal from Kristin May (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) in the 23rd minute when she connected on a 23-yard free kick after Morrissey was taken down at the top of the box.
Morrissey put the game-winner in the back of the net when she took a pass from May in the 54th minute, giving UC the victory. May whipped a cross to the top of the box where Morrissey served a half volley into the upper 90 of the goal.
"The goal by Morrissey was unreal," said Salmon. "It was probably one of the best goals all year. Sydney Barker came off the bench and did an outstanding job. She played such a great game. Andrea Kaminski really came out in the second half and provided outstanding leadership."
Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) earned the win in goal for UC, saving three shots. The Bearcats took nine shots to the Bulls six and UC held a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Cincinnati remains on the road, traveling to Milwaukee, Wis. to play Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. (EST).
