MILWAUKEE - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Marquette University on Sunday in BIG EAST action. The Bearcats are now 8-5-3 overall (4-2-3 BIG EAST) while Marquette is 9-5-3 (4-2-2 BIG EAST).
"We did an excellent job as a team and our defense was exceptional against a very good Marquette team," said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon. "They are a well coached, organized team so I am happy to get a point out of the game. To be on the road eight of the last 11 days and come away with eight points, I'm truly pleased with the character and mentality this team exhibits."
The duo of Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) and Kristin May (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) connected again as May served up a corner kick that Morrissey settled and kicked into the back of the net in the sixth minute of the game. Marquette caught UC in transition and responded 10 minutes later when Rachael Sloan took a pass from Danielle Martens to tie the game.
"Morrissey and May are finding each other well and are coming together nicely, but this was a total team performance today," said Salmon.
Neither team was able to score the remainder of the match, or through two overtime periods. UC's goalkeeper, Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville), had five saves to help preserve the tie.
"Andrea Kaminski is playing lights out soccer right now. Marquette threw everything they had at us and Kaminski is really doing a tremendous job in a leadership role," said Salmon. "She is stepping up in key moments and doing what needs to be done to prevent losses."
Cincinnati wraps up the 2008 regular season at Gettler Stadium, taking on Villanova at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 and playing Georgetown on Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
