PROVIDENCE, R.I.
— University of Cincinnati redshirt sophomore Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Oct. 20). Sophomore forward Branden Stelmak (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) was named to the league's honor roll.
Williams helped the Bearcats to a pair of 1-0 wins last week, posting his sixth and seventh shutouts of the season and making a combined six saves. In UC's win against Alabama A&M on Wednesday (Oct. 15), Williams assisted on the game-winning goal when he boomed a punt nearly the length of the field where Stelmak ran onto it and headed it past the onrushing AAMU keeper in the 85th minute. Williams and the UC defense earned the pair of shutouts, as Alabama A&M featured the leading goal scorer in the nation in MfanaFuthi Bhembe, and Rutgers was led by the third-leading scorer in the BIG EAST, Dilly Duka.
Stelmak scored game winners in both wins for the Bearcats, tallying in the 85th minute against Alabama A&M and early in the second half against conference foe Rutgers (Oct. 18). The sophomore leads the Bearcats with four goals, three game winners, and nine points.
The Bearcats will travel to Michigan State for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. in East Lansing.
