CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team begins its 2008-09 campaign at 1 p.m. Saturday, taking part in the Golden Grizzly Quadrangular at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
Along with the Bearcats men's and women's squads, participants include the host Golden Grizzlies, Western Kentucky, and Wayne State.
The women's squad will be led by Elinore de Jong, the 2007-08 UC MVP, and Shannon McCarthy, a finalist in the 200 backstroke at the BIG EAST Championship meet a year ago.
Josh Schneider, an NCAA All-American and BIG EAST Champion in the 50 freestyle in 2007-08 leads the men's team. He also placed 16th in the same event at the U.S. Olympic Trials during the summer, narrowly missing a slot in the finals. Schneider also set school records in both the 50 and 100.
Jakub Carda, Jeremy Peter, and Nathan Williams will also be key contributors for the men. Peter was the league champion in the 200 IM in 2007-08 while Carda and Williams were top-three placers at the BIG EAST meet.
