CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team, which earned its first trip to the 2008 BIG EAST Championship after finishing the regular season with a 9-6-3 overall record, is ranked 15th in the Great Lakes Region, according to the most recent Top 30 poll provided by Soccerbuzz.com.
"It's nice to be recognized by SoccerBuzz for the season we've had. We're excited to be playing in the BIG EAST Championship. This season we've really come together as a team and a family and to be recognized for what we've accomplished in the regular season speaks volumes about our program and the direction we are heading," said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon.
The Bearcats are ranked in the Great Lakes Region for the first time since the 2005 season. Their current No. 5 seed in the conference tournament, combined with a guaranteed winning record, marks the best season for UC since 2002, when the squad finished 17-4-3 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
"This says a lot about our senior class and the leadership they have provided in terms of guiding us this season. It also solidifies the respect that we are now getting in the soccer community," said Salmon.
UC will travel to No. 4 seed St. John's on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
