Standout in the classroom and a stalward defenfer of the Bearcat Goal Luke Henke not only intercepts the opponents coming down field and turns their breaks around - he then scores in the classroom. Luke maintains a 3.62 (out of 4.0) GPA as a finance major in the College of Business and is the CAS Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November.
A graduate of Milwaukee Lutheran High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was a four-year all conference selection and Lutheran All-American. Luke learned early how to balance athletics and academic commitments by earning high marks and setting the school single season and career goal scoring records.
"Being a student athlete is one of the most difficult jobs there is," states Luke. "Finding enough time is really hard. You have practice, work on conditioning, take in film and then find time for classes, homework. Traveling and making arrangements to get class lessons and exams handled complicates things even more. But I would tell every incoming student-athlete that the experience is well worth it. "
"Make the most of your time as a student-athlete," declares Luke. "For the past three years I've had the time of my life. Doing things together and great times with my friends and learning a lot in class have make being a Bearcat something special. I am really honored to wear the jersey and help to carry on the winning tradition of Bearcat sports.
"Being selected as the UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month is a huge honor. My parents are really proud of me and think I am keeping my priorities straight."
The Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award Presented by CAS
Dean Richard Newrock of the University of Cincinnati's College of Applied Science and Mike Thomas, Director of the UC Athletics Department announced the UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month award in August.
Each month of the academic year, the College of Applied Science, or CAS, will recognize a UC scholar-athlete who has demonstrated success both in the classroom and in an athletic arena. To be eligible for the award a scholar-athlete will have completed 2 years of education at UC, have a defined major, a cumulative grade point average (or GPA) of 3.25 or better, be in good standing, and have achieved athletic success.
"CAS is pleased to recognize scholar-athletes from across the university. Their dedication, competitive fire and ability to balance the demands of classroom, athletics and life parallel our own students," stated Dean Newrock. "Our students balance work and class schedules on a daily basis and are rewarded with top jobs upon graduation."
"On behalf of the College of Applied Science, I am honored to announce that CAS recognizes Luke Henke as the November UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Starting routinely for the Bearcat Soccer team as a stalwart defender while maintaining an excellent GPA, Luke certainly has our admiration."
"With a GPA of 3.62 and his excellence on the field. Luke Henke continues to prove that scholarship and athletics do go `hand-in-hand' His dedication to excellence on the field and in class is a model for all of our student-athletes," affirmed Mr. Thomas.
"It is an honor to have one of our collegiate partners, CAS, stepping forward to recognize our scholar-athletes."
