CINCINNATI - Former University of Cincinnati baseball coach and longtime Cincinnati Reds official scorer Glenn Sample passed away Friday evening at Mercy Hospital in Western Hills.
Sample coached the Bearcats for 21 years, amassing a 391-33-7 record. His 391 wins are the most wins of any coach in program history. He directed UC to four NCAA Tournament appearances and two Missouri Valley Conference titles, while sending more than 50 players on to the professional ranks. Alongside his baseball responsibilities, Sample also served as UC's wrestling coach and assistant athletic director during his tenure. Sample is a member of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Fame and his number (1) is one of two numbers retired by the UC baseball program.
Sample also served as the Cincinnati Reds official scorekeeper since 1979 and the 2009 season would have been his 30th in the Reds press box.
"This is a sad day for the University. I am so appreciative for the support that Coach Sample showed to me personally and the support he showed for our team," head baseball coach Brian Cleary said. "He was so well thought of by so many, in particular his former players who I know will be especially saddened by his passing. I and so many others will very much miss his presence at our games and our functions. I have not known a classier man or a better ambassador for UC."
