CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati City Council and Mayor Mark Mallory took time out from a council business meeting Wednesday to recognize the University of Cincinnati football program and its accomplishments during the 2008 season.

Head coach Brian Kelly and Director of Athletics Mike Thomas presented the mayor, a UC graduate, with a hat and UC football jacket and gave UC football hats to all the council members.

"You are on the brink of history," Mallory said. "We are so proud of everything that you've done so far."

The Bearcats (9-2, 5-1 BIG EAST) are on the verge of winning the program's first BIG EAST title and the league's automatic berth into the Bowl Championship Series.

If UC records a win Saturday against Syracuse, the Bearcats clinch the BIG EAST crown and BCS berth. UC will honor its 19-member senior class in a pregame ceremony at Nippert Stadium.
