WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Judson McKinney (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) scored his first career goal, but the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Georgetown in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday (Nov. 6) afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
The Bearcats (7-10-2, 4-6-1 BIG EAST), the No. 6 seed out of the BIG EAST's Red Division, was making its fourth straight appearance in the conference tournament, each of the four seasons that UC has been affiliated with the league.
Georgetown (11-4-3, 5-3-3) advances to take on No. 2 seed USF on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
McKinney scored his first collegiate goal in the 13th minute on a rebound, giving UC a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats were unable to hold the lead, as Georgetown scored three times before halftime. Scott Larrabee headed in a Mark Zeman corner kick in the 17th minute to knot the score and just five minutes later, Corey Zeller scored an unassisted goal to give the Hoyas the lead.
In the 24th minute, Peter Grasso was fouled in the box on an attempted breakaway, earning a penalty kick. Grasso stepped to the spot and converted for this seventh goal of the season and produced the final margin.
The Bearcats feverishly attacked in the second half in an attempt to get back into the match. The best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute when Mark Konitsch (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence Senior) got a head on a Nick Weightman (Lanark, Scotland/St. Aidan's) corner kick. The ball appeared to cross the goal line, but was cleared by a Georgetown defender.
UC is now 1-4-1 in BIG EAST Championship play.
