CINCINNATI -
Carleton College Swimming Release
The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team is set to take part in a nationwide charity event from 5-6 p.m. Thursday at the Keating Aquatic Center.
The Third-Annual Ted Mullin Hour of Power Relay, sponsored by the Carleton College swimming and diving teams is in honor of former teammate Edward H. "Ted" Mullin, who passed away from a rare soft-tissue cancer in September 2006.
"We are pleased to participate in an event with such a growing national scope, head coach Monty Hopkins said. "The original effort was to raise money for one particular cancer victim, but as the effort grows, so does the scope. We're proud to swim with swim teams all over the country in honor of this worthy cause."
The 'Hour of Power' is a practice consisting of continuous relays, using any stroke, all-out swimming for an hour. An ultimate goal of the 'Hour of Power' is to promote team spirit and generate awareness of cancer and its impact on the lives on young adults.
As of Nov. 1, nearly 80 college swimming programs encompassing 29 different conferences have signed up to take part in this year's event. Additionally, 14 club, high-school and international teams will participate. Over 5,000 athletes are registered for the event.
Participants are asked to gather pledges and donations for the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago where Mullin underwent treatment. The University of Chicago will provide participating teams with packets of information in advance of the event to aid in the fund-raising effort, as well as information regarding sarcoma, the type of cancer that claimed Ted's life.
Since the inaugural event in 2006, the Hour of Power has raised more than $54,000.
Funds raised during the event act as seed funding for the University of Chicago pediatric sarcoma research program, allowing collaborative efforts between clinicians and physician-scientists in the identification of the causes of sarcoma, at the most basic molecular and cellular levels.
