CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team was defeated by West Virginia Saturday in the Bearcats home opener at the Keating Aquatics Center. The men were downed 161-137 and the women were narrowly topped 147.5-142.5.

The men were paced by the efforts of the trio of Nathan Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Josh Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taylor) and Jeremy Peter (Obernai, France/Lycee Freppel).

Williams, a long distance specialist, won the 500 yard freestyle in a time 4:37.78 and the 1650 yard freestyle in 16:00.45. Peter was victorious in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 backstroke in times of 58.23 and 1:52.43, respectively.

Schneider, a 2007 NCAA qualifier, swept the short freestyle events posting times of 20.57 in the 50 freestyle and 46.49 in the 100 freestyle.

Other winners for the men included; Nate Kramer (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:43.09 and the 800 yard Free Relay team of Williams, Stephen Cunningham (Dublin, Ireland/Terenure College), Kramer and Jakub Carda (Brno, Czech Repulic/Sportovni Gymnasium) in a time of 6:56.07.

The women's team entered the final event in a tie with the visiting Mountaineers, with only the 800 yard Free Relay to be contested. The Bearcats were unable to overtake West Virginia in the event and were defeated by five points.

Cincinnati was led by Elinore de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum), who won the 50 yard Freestyle in a time of 24.02 and the 100 yard Butterfly finishing in 55.41.

Sophomore Kirtley Krombholz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) broke the school record in the one meter dive, recording a mark of 305.33, topping an 18-year record held by Della Eveslage. Also, winning individual events were Emma Misanik (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) in the 100 yard Breaststroke in a time of 1:06.58 and Liz Hanson in the 200 Freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:54.07.

The Bearcats return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 15, playing host to BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh. Start time is set for noon in the Keating Aquatics Center.
