The University of Cincinnati tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to Toledo Saturday at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The Bearcats and Rockets split the singles points with three apiece, but Toledo earned the doubles point.
The No. 3 singles match was the overall decider as UC's Valeriya Dandik and Toledo's Maha Guiguis battled in a three-set thriller. Dandik took the first set,7-6 (5), and led the second set, 5-2, before Guirguis rallied to force things to a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (5). Dandik dropped the third set by a 6-4 count.
The bottom half of UC's lineup was strong with the Bearcats earning victories in the No. 4-6 singles slot. The No. 3 doubles team of Jessica Wise and Safiyya Ismail earned an 8-2 win.
Ismail knocked off Nadia Zoubareva 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 4, Wise defeated Jenny Belsky 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Elizabeth Young beat Melissa Reynolds 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6.
Kesnia Slynko fell 6-2, 6-3, to Martina Wodzinski at No. 1 singles and Jennifer Rowen dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Ashley Frey.
UC (1-1) is back in action Sunday against Marshall at 4 p.m. The match will take place at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The facility is located at 5490 Muddy Creek Road in Cincinnati. For more information on the facility, go to www.westerntfc.com.
