The 2009 spring season presents a unique challenge for the University of Cincinnati women's golf team, one in which seven letterwinners are returning and two incoming student-athletes are poised to contribute to the team.
Despite the loss of two key performers, Hillery Wilson and Allison Mayborg, the team has showed early success in the fall where they were able to lower their scoring average two strokes per round. Additionally, the team set two new scoring records in the fall, one at Elks Run and the second at Seatrail.
"We are a young team," said head coach Janet Carl, "but I am excited about the potential this team showed in the fall."
Fall Success an Optimistic Gauge for Challenging Spring Slate
After the fall, Carl said the team sat down together and examined their past performances. After examining their strengths and weaknesses, the team recommitted to their goals and has been working towards them since, especially on their short game.
''With the addition of our new indoor facility on campus, the team has logged a lot of hours in there working on putting and chipping," said Carl. "I am really looking forward to the players getting to see their commitments pay off this spring."
Going in with five tournaments under their belt, the team's spring schedule features five additional tournaments, followed by the BIG EAST Championships in April. The Kiawah Island Women's Invitational, beginning on Feb. 21, will feature some of the top 50 programs in the country. On March 6, the Bearcats will begin the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, a tournament in which the team will take on many of the top schools in the central region. The Bearcats face another challenge when they head to Miami, Fla., for the Canes and Cardinal Classic tournament that tees off on April 6. Once again, the tournament will be a challenge for the Bearcats team as they go up against multiple top-75 programs.
The Bearcats will host the UC Women's Spring Invitational on March 27 and 28 in Crystal River, Fla., during their time off for spring break.
Key Performers
Senior Marianne Erb is expected to take on the leadership role in what will be the last tournaments of her career at UC. If the fall season is any indication, both Erb and junior Kate Moore are set to have impressive spring outings.
Bambee Dela Paz, a sophomore on the team, will be counted on for her consistency and work ethic. Additionally, freshman Anna Cumtell, who currently boasts the lowest scoring average on the team, is also a top performer to look for.
The Bearcats are set to tee off at the end of the month of February, a date that cannot come soon enough for the team.
"They have set some very achievable goals and we, as a team, are excited about our potential going into the spring after setting ourselves up for success in the fall," said Carl.
