CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team knocked off Rutgers University, 4-3, on Saturday, to pick up its first win of the BIG EAST Conference season. The win evened the Bearcats conference record at 1-1.
The match came down to the No. 1 singles match as freshman Ksenia Slynko rallied for a three-set win over Rutgers' Amy Zhang (5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-5). In the third set Slynko battled back from down two match points in the third set to win 7-5.
Senior Valeriya Dandik and freshman Safiyya Ismail brought home the other two singles points, winning the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
The Bearcats earned the first point of the match as Dandik and Slynko captured the No. 1 doubles (8-2) and Ismail and fellow freshman Jessica Wise took the No. 3 doubles (9-7).
In total four of the six singles matches went to three sets.
The Bearcats (3-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) return to the courts Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22 in Youngstown, Ohio, where they will face St. Bonaventure and Youngstown, respectively.
