INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Josh Schneider won his second BIG EAST title of the meet, clocking 46.78 in the 100-yard butterfly to break his own school and meet records on day three of the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Schneider, who had clocked an NCAA 'B' time of 47.47 in the Friday morning prelims, led the entire race and narrowly missed the NCAA 'A' standard of 46.04. He set meet, and school records and hit the NCAA 'A' standard in the 50 freestyle on Thursday.
The men's team has tallied 250 points through 27 events and sits fifth, behind Notre Dame (567), Louisville (530), Pittsburgh (355.5), and West Virginia (271). Following the Bearcats are Connecticut (197), Seton Hall (150.5), Syracuse (148), Georgetown (82), Villanova (60), and Providence (48).
The women's squad is eighth with 136 points, behind Notre Dame (567), Louisville (408), Pittsburgh (315.5), West Virginia (256), Rutgers (247), Villanova (168.5), and Connecticut (167.5). UC leads Syracuse (127.5), Seton Hall (52), Georgetown (46), and Providence (44).
Schneider added a 42.26 clocking on the freestyle leg of the 400-medley relay, helping UC to a school-record time of 3:14.76, and a second-place finish behind Louisville (3:11.02). Jeremy Peter led off in the backstroke, followed by Rob Langford in the breaststroke, and Patryk Wakula in the butterfly ahead of Schneider. The Bearcats' time is and NCAA 'B' cut, and broke the previous school-record of 3:19.04 which had stood since 2005.
The UC school record also fell in the women's 400-medley relay. The Bearcats clocked 3:46.38 to win the first of two heats and place seventh overall. The previous school mark of 3:48.47 had stood since 2000. Shannon McCarthy led off with the backstroke, followed by Karli Kentner in the breaststroke, Elinore de Jong in the butterfly, and Lange Gilby in the freestyle.
Peter placed third in the 100 backstroke, besting his own school record in the process. Peter tallied a time of 48.53 to eclipse his record of 49.01 that was set in the morning preliminaries.
Kentner reset her school record in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke. Kentner placed fifth with a time of 1:03.48, eclipsing her own mark of 1:03.62, set in the morning preliminaries.
De Jong bettered her NCAA 'B' time cut, placing second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.80.
Jakub Carda placed fourth in the 400-yard IM with a season-best time of 3:53.11. Carda was also honored before the meet for being named UC's BIG EAST Scholar Athlete.
Langford earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke consolation final with a time of 56.67. Britton Van Dissel earned eighth place in the heat with a time of 59.21.
Stephen Cunningham clocked 1:38.52 to place second in the consolation final of the 200 freestyle, while Nick Saul took seventh in the same heat with a time of 1:41.63.
Wakula placed fifth in the consolation final of the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 49.14.
The meet concludes Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. Only swimmers who met the conference standards qualified for competition in Indianapolis. Fans can follow the meet live online by clicking the championship central link at both GoBEARCATS.com and BIGEAST.org.
